PALIYAN, (KH)— Banyak disebutkan bahwa Gunungkidul merupakan tempat pelarian orang-orang Kerajaan Majapahit. Hal tersebut berdasar cerita rakyat, legenda, dan peninggalan masa lampau berupa petilasan yang tersebar di berbagai wilayah. Banyak diyakini umumnya berasal dari kebudayaan masa Majapahit.
Tokoh dalam cerita rakyat atau sejarah yang menyertai keberadaan peninggalan berupa petilasan di wilayah Gunungkidul tampaknya selalu erat dikaitkan dengan nama tokoh Brawijaya V. Ia diyakini sebagai raja terakhir Majapahit berdasar naskah-naskah dan serat, sehingga muncullah keyakinan bahwa sebagian besar pelarian yang ke Gunungkidul merupakan keturunannya.
Seperti halnya petilasan Bondan Surati yang berada di Padukuhan Karangasem B, Desa Karangasem, Kecamatan Paliyan. Keberadaan petilasan tersebut juga memiliki penggalan cerita dari masyarakat setempat.
Dari salah satu sumber kepustakaan, diperoleh kisah bahwa Bondan Surati bersama saudara-saudaranya, yakni Wonokusumo dan Wanabaya, ada juga Raden Joko Guntur, setelah datang mereka lalu menghuni beberapa lokasi di Gunungkidul.
Alkisah, Bondan Surati menjadi bagian dari orang-orang Majapahit yang pergi ke Gunungkidul ketika pecah perang Majapahit melawan Demak pada abad ke 15. Wilayah Gunungkidul dianggap aman oleh orang-orang Majapahit untuk bersembunyi menyelamatkan diri dari kejaran musuh karena masih berupa hutan belantara. Putra Mahkota Bondan Surati merupakan putra ke-26 Raja Majapahit.¹
Sedangkan menurut Muryadi, tokoh sepuh di Desa Karangasem, meskipun sudah tidak runtut, ia mewarisi cerita dari para pendahulunya mengenai keberadaan Bondan Surati di wilayahnya.
Cerita turun temurun yang diingatnya, setelah orang-orang Majapahit datang dari timur, perjalanannya bergerak ke arah selatan dan barat. Dirinya tidak ingat secara keseluruhan, namun ada beberapa di antaranya yang dianggap cukup dikenal.
Dari sebelah timur, di Karangmojo ada yang namanya Wonokusumo dan Noto Kusumo, lalu ke arah selatan ada Ki Ageng Giring berada di Giring Sodo, lantas Bondan Surati di Karangasem Paliyan.
“Lalu terus ke barat hingga Kulonprogo ada nama Mangir, lalu terakhir di Madura, tidak tahu persis namanya, memiliki keturunan yang populer disebut Cakraningrat, saya tidak tahu banyak tentang hal ini,” ujar Muryadi.
Petilasan Bondan Surati yang terdapat di pemakaman umum desa setempat berada di sebuah bagunan rumah. Di dalamnya terdapat tiga nisan. Disampaikan Sukasno Rejo selaku juru kunci, dua nisan yang lain adalah Bondan Kejawan dan Joko Brumbun.
Meski nisan Bondan Kejawan berada di Desa Karangasem Paliyan, namun banyak sumber yang menyebutkan bahwa di situ bukan merupakan makamnya. Nisan itu hanya sebagai penanda petilasan saja. Ada yang menyebutkan, Pangeran Bondhan Kejawan atau R. Lembu Peteng atau Kyai Ageng Tarub III, makamnya berada di daerah Selo Purwodadi Jawa Tengah.
