Perlu dicontoh bagaimana ibu-ibu bangsa Jepang mendidik anak menghargai makanan sejak kecil. Sudah menjadi kebiasaan dalam masyarakat Jepang pada waktu makan, saat makan nasi diambil dan ditaruh dalam mangkuk kecil. Menjadi budaya orang Jepang bahwa makanan yang sudah diambil harus habis. Jadi waktu mengambil disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan.
Cara mendidik anak yang dilakukan ibu-ibu orang Jepang untuk menghargai nasi dimulai saat anak mulai bisa makan sendiri. Nasi yang sudah diambil dalam mangkuk kecil harus habis. Saat hampir akhir makan, masih tersisa butiran nasi yang menempel dalam mangkuk. Anak kecil tentu tidak bisa mengambilnya pakai sumpit. Kemudian si ibu mengajarinya dengan cara mencelupkan sumpit pada kuah. Nasi yang menempel lekat dengan mangkuk jadi mudah diambil dengan sumpit.
Dari sisi lain, meledaknya jumlah penduduk akhir-akhir ini memberikan perkiraan akan terjadi krisis pangan yang kedua. Diperkirakan terjadi pada tahun 2017. Dunia sekarang dijejali dengan 7 milyar penduduk. Penduduk Indonesia pada tahun 2030 diperkirakan akan berjumlah 300 juta. Sejumlah 167 juta jiwa di antara tinggal di Jawa.
